Award Winning, Radio Playing, Homecoming Showing Peace, Love & Tea with Matt Henshaw

Matt Henshaw Midlands Music Award

Goooooooooooood Morning !! This afternoon I'm on the radio, the FM airwaves in Birmingham again, this time Switch Radio at noon to collect this beautiful piece of glass for "Best Independent Male Singer/Songwriter in the Midlands" ... the award ceremony itself was a little like graduating from university, you wait for ages to go up and you don't really get anything aside from a handshake on the stage ... but this was worth the wait ... not that graduating university wasn't ... or was it ?!

Ich Liebe Deutschland ! MHx (Songs & Whispers Tour Diary 2)

10 days into the the German leg of the Peace, Love & Tea European Tour and, I have to say it, I'm starting to become quite fond of this little old place ! So rich in colour, people, there's a vibrancy, a history, even a warmth in the midst of winter, I know everyone's driving on the wrong side of the road still, and the kms make no sense where my miles would, but what can you do in the middle of the German countryside snow ?? Write a strongly word letter to the Kaiser, Napoleon or Angela Merkel and hope to find a post box ? I don't think so ...

Anyways, music ? Yeah, I've played quite a lot of it, and - like Ringo Starr upon the 'Helter Skelter' - "I've got blisters on me fingers!" but alles gut ! And it is to Hamburg I am heading tonight having just played a great little show in the theatre of the University of Bremen.

Last night I was right up on the most far north-western coast of Germany, a place called Emden, just over the harbour lay the Netherlands, I played some English songs, it was an old Polish cake shop, of which the now Turkish owner told me he sells beers to all ages, even 70 and 80 year olds who remember it as the only place you could buy cakes on a Sunday for 50km, students from each part of Germany and Holland gather and speak great English, and some of those from Belgium speak up to 5 languages, the beer and tea and coffee is from afar a field as Brazil and the wine from Lating nations of Italy, France and Spain, I have found Americans, Russians, and Scandinavian folk drinking Guinness ...

... I ate Börek (Turkish pastry filled with egg, mushrooms and spinach) and vegan pancakes in Canadian maple syrups in amongst the crowd was an old stained glass window maker from Birmingham with a lady friend, and next time an English or an American tells you that "Germans and/or Muslims have no sense of humour" tell them that's just not the case. I met the loveliest young man whose family originated from Jordan in the Middle East but he was born in the little town of Delmenhorst just outside of Bremen.

The graffiti under one of the autobahn bridges reads "The Only Good Nation is Imagination" and I say all this I say as a European, Internationalist, happy and healthy member of the human race plying my trade on the continent ... we are all one and interconnected with our own cultural and spiritual reference points but Love and kindness connects us all ! Cast aside any ideas or anyone you come across espousing the ideas of fear, embrace one and all, and never feel uneasy ! Peace, Love & Tea x

And remember ... Your Eyes Are Made Of Gold ...

The Brown Lion, Birmingham setlist ...

Greetings web dwellers,

A pleasant night in Birmingham was had by all, by all means. So much so that I'm going to make the trip over the Brum twice more this week. Tonight I'll be at the Actress & Bishop with Muthafunk in the Funk Realm. It's gonna be funkay ... and Thursday night on Hockley Street. I am a child of the East but all the West Midlands love I am receiving at the moment is certainly warming the cockles. The week will be capped by Party in the Park in Birmingham again and then Godiva Festival in Coventry net week ... trailing the Warwickshire Festival circuit and Satsuma Elephants all over the Staffordshire airwaves ! Woop !

Here's the tunes I did last night, great little hootenany at the Brown Lion, some excellent musicians joining me for impromptu jams ...
It Ain't Easy
707
Dutch Courage
I've Had Tears
Naughty Girls
25 Miles
Gimme Some More
Tin Soldier

... cracking stuff. Thanks Andy, Lukasz, Andy, Sam, Sam, Chris, Ste, Sean, Tim, Kalik, Lisa, Andy and everyone that was down, jamming and/or otherwise.

The Brown Lion in Birmingham tonight ...

Evening friends,

Just about to head out the door to Birmingham, going over to the Brown Lion for an acoustic show accompanied by Muthafunk saxophonist Lukasz. Looking forward to it. Should be a real good show. Gonna be doing some Satsuma Elephants stuff, some B-Boy Soul and a few soul numbers you'll probably know and love, and if you don't know and love soul music then I've no idea what you're doing here !

Hayfever is a bit of an annoyance, any got it? Send me some tips on how to stop sneezing between writing every sentence of my blog. That would be most helpful !

Here's an acoustic number recorded a few weeks back in the living room of a big fan ... I wasn't allowed through the door without my acoustic guitar and a willingness to sing Can't Hold Back ! Good times nonetheless. You're all beautiful, and if you ever want me to come and play in your living room I probably will, for food and petrol money. I'm easy like Lionel Richie.

The Actress & Bishop setlists ...

Evening chaps and chapesses,

Here's the songs I played at the Actress & Bishop in Birmingham last Wednesday 6th June. We were booked in with MuthaFunk and ReggiiMental to play upstairs at our soon to be regular club night The Funk Realm, and then surprisingly downstairs after hours was an open mic night run by none other than Andy Bennett of Ocean Colour Scene, so we did the gig upstairs and then I hung around until 3am jamming with Brimingham's finest.

Upstairs @ the Actress & Bishop, Birmingham ...
What's Going On
The Funky Chicken
Think Twice
Gimme Some More
Coming Around
Nitty Gritty
It's Gettin' Late
Can't Hold Back

And downstairs at the open mic acoustically, accompanied by Lukasz of MuthaFunk on saxophone ...
It Ain't Easy
Always In The Way
Donkey Rides, A Penny A Glass
707
Not In Nottingham
Your Eyes Are Made Of Gold

How jolly pleasant and spiffing it all was. Plenty of Birmingham/Nottingham "banter" and good times had by all.

Here's me playing 'Let Everything Go' acoustically, a new addition to the Satsuma Elephants set ... a sing-a-long ... learn the words !!!

The Roadhouse, Birmingham Setlist ...

So good evening/good morning Birmingham; or should I say Derby, as now I'm down in The Deepest Cellar doing what myself and ReggiiMental call "blapping" !

Anyways, where was I ? Oh yeah, setlist; or should I say, setlist(s) ...

So, arrived at the venue, the Roadhouse in Birmingham ready to soundcheck, and that's what we did, but, next door I noticed there was an open mic night, so I did two sets. An impromptu bit of acoustic love, featuring ReggiiMental who walked through the door, late of course, to see me about to play my final song, so I got him on.

Acoustic set ...
It Ain't Easy
Always In The Way
In The Presence Of The Lord
Can't Hold Back

And then onto the evening set with the MuthaFunk ...
Save The World
Sunrise
Think Twice
Can't Hold Back
Pick Up The Pieces
Gimme Some More
Loving You
Space Cowboy

So, there it is ... the first bit of Coming Around on tour ... see you in Nottingham on Saturday !

Matt Henshaw & MuthaFunk ...

Morning home boys and girls,

So, last night myself and ReggiiMental were in Birmingham rehearsing with our new group, Brummy soul and funksters, MuthaFunk ! And to say I'm excited like a boy at Christmas with the promise of his first brand new shiny bike would be an understatement !!! I can't wait to start performing live and kicking with these chaps. The new stuff and a bit of the old stuff sounds fantastic with the group.

Here's a little vid of footage from out rehearsal snapped up by BH Media who will be filming some of our live shows this summer for the Coming Around documentary ...

And one exciting show I'll tell you more about shortly is my first Nottingham show in 5 years ... brand new outfit, might even buy a new outfit and it's nice to see Reggii out and fit bouncing around the stage ... Peace & Love !!

Laughs and Giggles ...

What a "Segsational night" ... (this blog is brought to you by Terry's ... the chocolate orange people) ...

Tim Minchin is really rather quite funny isn't he ... quite the Christmas treat, and making me think of my brother sipping white wine on the beach in Australia this Christmas was quite bittersweet, as I type at you from London approaching a Christmas in Derbyshire via Nottingham, Tamworth, Birmingham, Derby and Leicester I wish I could throw another shrimp on the barbie this Christmas. Nevermind, I'll make do with an Iceland prawn party ring.

Paul Weller was great obviously, and great to hear a good set comprised of songs only two of which were over 5 years old. I think some of the older contingent would've left unhappy if he hadn't closed with a seemingly reluctant encore of 'Town Called Malice' ...

Anyhoo, I think I'm gonna be on an FM radio Christmas extra special on Friday night ... I'll let you know more as soon as I know.

Peace & Love, scroll down for a picture of me trying to stare into your soul,
Matt H. x
