Matt Henshaw Midlands Music Award

Goooooooooooood Morning !! This afternoon I'm on the radio, the FM airwaves in Birmingham again, this time Switch Radio at noon to collect this beautiful piece of glass for "Best Independent Male Singer/Songwriter in the Midlands" ... the award ceremony itself was a little like graduating from university, you wait for ages to go up and you don't really get anything aside from a handshake on the stage ... but this was worth the wait ... not that graduating university wasn't ... or was it ?!

A Little Late November Update ...

Evening, Morning, Afternoon Folks,

A quick fly by blog whilst I'm in the mood. Very productive times here at Henshaw Towers. Everything going swimmingly and according to plan, looking forward to a happy and hopefully excited 2014, as I'm sure you all are too. Stick with me, Team Matt Henshaw needs all the love and support it can get.

I've been touting my wares at radio stations and doing interviews around the Midlands and South Yorkshire and I'm getting round to getting everything on YouTube for you all to watch, Like and share with your friends ... around 1000 subscribers now and steady stream of views up in the 1000s for each video I have shared. Keep watching, the ethos for most of the things I am uploading at the moment is get the songs out there with the title and my name and let the music do the talking, hopefully it is and you like everything I'm throwing at you ...

Here's a video from Demon FM session I did at O Bar for The Monograph magazine, look out for a feature in there in the first 2014 edition along with Kasabian and By The Rivers ...

Matt Henshaw Recommends
I hope you've been enjoying my recommendations so far. I hope to share with you one of my favourite underground acts every week, and keep up the quality of my recommendations, so far they been brilliant, check back if you haven't read about the guys and gals I been telling everyone about just lately ... I'm such a generous fella ! In this interview I get asked to plug my website and shows and end up talking about Charlotte Carpenter and Leah Sinead for about 5 minutes ...

Matt Henshaws Horticultural Gardening Blog ...
I hope to keep you informed about my garden over the winter and into the new year, there's not a huge amount growing at the moment in the midst of the frosty season, but we have little bits, you know I think compost will save the world, and I'm excited about the Chocolate Peppers I will have to introduce you to come January ... here's a little song I wrote inspired by my pastoral endeavours and seemingly care free lifestyle ... it's called Hakuna Matata ... no, not really, No Matter How from my Coalville Hermitage FM session on The Launch Pad ...

More blog ideas coming soon, and I think I might be due a football rant, but it's all good, some nice shows coming up and plenty of opportunities for some tea with friends and family over the festive season.

Merry November All & see you on the other side !

In the Garden with Matt Henshaw - Henshaw's Horticultural Blog

It's been a long week. I've been threatening to write more blogs so here we go again, up the hill and around the bend. This week I've been writing - polishing up two new numbers for playing out loud live, one quiet moment for putting kittens to sleep and another one for my imaginary film soundtrack - and I've played a brand new song 'No Matter How' in a live radio session for 99.2 Hermitage FM that went out on Saturday night, to be repeated again on Tuesday night at 10pm. I've done an interview with John Sinclair of BBC Radio Leicester for the Leicester New Music podcast and lined up live sessions for Trent Sound in Nottingham plus Takeover FM Radio in Leicester. So what have I been doing in between ... gardening of course!

Preparing Your Winter Vegetable Patch

So, moving into a new house you've got to put in some elbow grease to prepare what few things you can plant in the early weeks of October. I arrived at a yard covered in weeds, waist high, and soil filled with big stones, hefty tree stumps, roots beyond roots, and, sadly, loads of broken glass. With a fork, a wheelie bin, new compost bin and a knife to get in the crannies of the old uneven slab work, pesky weed roots ! This picture may not seem too impressive - red wellies aside, which are obviously impressive - but that soil is looking immense considering it's starting position, I wish I'd taken a 'before' picture!

Make sure your soil is well dug over, remove all debris, save greenery, chopped weeds and little roots for the compost, but unfortunately some roots and tree stumps might be too large for the compost and might have to go in the bin; or you could save them for a fire in the future, leave to try and enjoy at a later date ! In terms of "saving the planet"; or, furthermore, the conditions for human life on this sphere we call earth, I truly believe that getting deep down and dirty and back to gardening, urban, rural, small or large scale, or otherwise, is the first step and the way to go for almost everyone. Composting is the simplest thing you can do. I'll expand on this theory at a later stage, and I'll give you some more hints, tips, journal entries and general garden fettering in the future. Hope you'll stick with me on Henshaw's Horticultural Blog, what have I planted? Seedlings?? Forking good times???

And, most importantly, stay cool, and keep listening ...

Peace & Green,
Matt Henshaw x

The Brown Lion, Birmingham setlist ...

Greetings web dwellers,

A pleasant night in Birmingham was had by all, by all means. So much so that I'm going to make the trip over the Brum twice more this week. Tonight I'll be at the Actress & Bishop with Muthafunk in the Funk Realm. It's gonna be funkay ... and Thursday night on Hockley Street. I am a child of the East but all the West Midlands love I am receiving at the moment is certainly warming the cockles. The week will be capped by Party in the Park in Birmingham again and then Godiva Festival in Coventry net week ... trailing the Warwickshire Festival circuit and Satsuma Elephants all over the Staffordshire airwaves ! Woop !

Here's the tunes I did last night, great little hootenany at the Brown Lion, some excellent musicians joining me for impromptu jams ...
It Ain't Easy
707
Dutch Courage
I've Had Tears
Naughty Girls
25 Miles
Gimme Some More
Tin Soldier

... cracking stuff. Thanks Andy, Lukasz, Andy, Sam, Sam, Chris, Ste, Sean, Tim, Kalik, Lisa, Andy and everyone that was down, jamming and/or otherwise.

Here's a poster for Sunday's shindig, if you're a Brummie, a Black Country rambler or just nearby then make sure you come down for some funkaliscious good times ...

And some videos for your listening and viewing pleasure ...

The Actress & Bishop setlists ...

Evening chaps and chapesses,

Here's the songs I played at the Actress & Bishop in Birmingham last Wednesday 6th June. We were booked in with MuthaFunk and ReggiiMental to play upstairs at our soon to be regular club night The Funk Realm, and then surprisingly downstairs after hours was an open mic night run by none other than Andy Bennett of Ocean Colour Scene, so we did the gig upstairs and then I hung around until 3am jamming with Brimingham's finest.

Upstairs @ the Actress & Bishop, Birmingham ...
What's Going On
The Funky Chicken
Think Twice
Gimme Some More
Coming Around
Nitty Gritty
It's Gettin' Late
Can't Hold Back

And downstairs at the open mic acoustically, accompanied by Lukasz of MuthaFunk on saxophone ...
It Ain't Easy
Always In The Way
Donkey Rides, A Penny A Glass
707
Not In Nottingham
Your Eyes Are Made Of Gold

How jolly pleasant and spiffing it all was. Plenty of Birmingham/Nottingham "banter" and good times had by all.

Here's me playing 'Let Everything Go' acoustically, a new addition to the Satsuma Elephants set ... a sing-a-long ... learn the words !!!

(If You Think) You're Groovy from the Small Faces Convention 2010 ...

Sunday 15th August ... Matt Henshaw and Chris Goring take to the stage again for the first time since December 2008 when they were in a little Nottingham band called Censored ... this time it's an all the more retrospective affair playing an acoustic and percussion set of Small Faces and Steve Marriott related songs ... the set went Black Coffee (originally written and recorded by Ike & Tina Turner subsequently covered by Steve Marriott as part of Humble Pie), (If You Think) You're Groovy (written by Marriott and Ronnie Lane for Immediate records label mate and former Ikette PP Arnold, who also did backing vocals on the Small Faces hit Tin Soldier), this was followed by a medley of songs that Marriott sang in various guises through the late 60s and early seventies (You Need Lovin' by Willie Dixon which formed the foundations of Led Zeppelin's monster anthem Whole Lotta Love, I Walk on Guilded Splinters from voodoo jazz folk rocker Dr. John from his eponymous album Gris Gris & The Night Tripper, later covered by Paul Weller joined on acoustic guitar by Noel Gallagher, For Your Love by the Yardbirds which at the time included Eric Clapton before they adopted Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, and a sprinkling of Small Faces tune E Too D and the Spencer Davis Group's I'm A Man), the closing two numbers were My Way Of Giving and Afterglow (Of You Love) ... I understand that last paragraph is a bit of a muddle ... if you followed it, well done, if you didn't, just know this ... Christopher and I very much enjoyed the thrill of performing on stage together again in our glorious capital and it certainly won't be the last time we do so ... Footage from the 14th Annual Small Faces Convention presented by Wapping Wharf organised by John Hellier ... filmed from the side of the stage by sound and stage manager Andrew P Gilbert ... Many thanks to all who attended Islington, North London's Relentless Garage on that far from Lazy Sunday afternoon ... Torch Forever !!!
