The Music Freak Video Interview with Matt Henshaw

Can’t Hold Back is the brand new EP by singer-songwriter Matt Henshaw, whose lyrical mod-indie credentials are being coupled with the unlikely combination of UK hip hop artist Reggimental, to produce this perfect EP, released on Rusty Juke Box Records on the 10th October 2010.

Henshaw, originally from Nottingham, has been in previous musical incarnations such as the band Censored, when at the tender age of 17, played Leeds, Reading and Isle Of Wight festivals, receiving substantial amount of radio airplay and supporting the likes of Snow Patrol, We Are Scientists, Supergrass, Ocean Colour Scene, Arctic Monkeys, The Bluetones and The Holloways.

In true rock'n'roll style, exasperated by years of alcohol dependency, band in-fighting, struggles against the confines of unimaginative industry labelling, and the bitter dissolution of several personal relationships, he decided to go away. He spent a whole year where he didn't touch a guitar or sing a note, instead he wrote a novel and a series of short stories, started gardening, quit alcohol and decided to study film at university with no aspirations to sing again.

The Music Freak asked Matt to do his own video interview. Matt ended up doing quite a lovely job indeed.

Matt Henshaw at The Gaff 23.09.10

The first thing that strikes you about Matt Henshaw is his dress sense, in a grey suit jacket his quirky sense of fashion makes him stand out from the crowd. However, the minute he opens his mouth all you can focus on is his magnificent voice, it wouldn’t matter if he was wearing a brown paper bag.

His voice is so different from what we are hearing in abundance at the moment, it is deeply soulful beyond his years. The Gaff club in Holloway road is the perfect place to stage the ‘Prove It’ show case which Matt is headlining along with Reggiimental who he is collaborating with. With is dark and gloomy but totally trendy décor and uber cool atmosphere it sets the perfect scene for his performance.

With his modest demeanour and this hugely powerful voice watching Matt is memorizing. The sound is unique, mixed with Reggiimental’s MCing it fuses two very different genres in a surprisingly successful way. ‘The Deepest Cellar’ is a track that has the funkiest bass line this side of the 70’s with an urban edge thanks to Reggiimental’s superb MC skills. The best song of the night is undoubtedly ‘Can’t hold back’ the title track from Matt’s forthcoming EP.

As with all of his songs there is a really strong soul influence but with relevantly modern lyrics thanks to Reggiimental. Matt sings ‘see my friends you have to live your life,’ and there is something that really resonates there. Uplifting lyrics and melody make this a real feel good song that can’t help but leave you smiling, and wanting to hear more.

It’s clear why Matt Henshaw is this year’s NME Breakthrough artist, and why the duo was voted by NME readers to open the Lovebox festival earlier this year. Matt, who the BBC described as ‘just perfect’ releases his debut EP ‘Can’t Hold Back’ on the 10th of October..

(If You Think) You're Groovy from the Small Faces Convention 2010 ...

Sunday 15th August ... Matt Henshaw and Chris Goring take to the stage again for the first time since December 2008 when they were in a little Nottingham band called Censored ... this time it's an all the more retrospective affair playing an acoustic and percussion set of Small Faces and Steve Marriott related songs ... the set went Black Coffee (originally written and recorded by Ike & Tina Turner subsequently covered by Steve Marriott as part of Humble Pie), (If You Think) You're Groovy (written by Marriott and Ronnie Lane for Immediate records label mate and former Ikette PP Arnold, who also did backing vocals on the Small Faces hit Tin Soldier), this was followed by a medley of songs that Marriott sang in various guises through the late 60s and early seventies (You Need Lovin' by Willie Dixon which formed the foundations of Led Zeppelin's monster anthem Whole Lotta Love, I Walk on Guilded Splinters from voodoo jazz folk rocker Dr. John from his eponymous album Gris Gris & The Night Tripper, later covered by Paul Weller joined on acoustic guitar by Noel Gallagher, For Your Love by the Yardbirds which at the time included Eric Clapton before they adopted Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, and a sprinkling of Small Faces tune E Too D and the Spencer Davis Group's I'm A Man), the closing two numbers were My Way Of Giving and Afterglow (Of You Love) ... I understand that last paragraph is a bit of a muddle ... if you followed it, well done, if you didn't, just know this ... Christopher and I very much enjoyed the thrill of performing on stage together again in our glorious capital and it certainly won't be the last time we do so ... Footage from the 14th Annual Small Faces Convention presented by Wapping Wharf organised by John Hellier ... filmed from the side of the stage by sound and stage manager Andrew P Gilbert ... Many thanks to all who attended Islington, North London's Relentless Garage on that far from Lazy Sunday afternoon ... Torch Forever !!! Video Diary August 2010 w/ ReggiiMental, Rukus & Jamie Carragher ...

So, August 2010 has been a busy one thus far, here's a few snippets of video to let you know what we have, or haven't been up to, honestly we do do a lot of hard work besides all this ... First off we went down to Brixton Academy on the 1st to see ReggiiMental's uncle Dean Frazer who was playing sax for Taurus Riley at a massive reggae show with original Wailer Bunny Wailer and Capleton ... a real goooooood night ... and we hooked up with Skinnyman and Rtillery to talk about future collaborations and have a realy good time ... you know this Mud Fam !!! We've taken in the festivals that are Y-Not and Out The Box ... jolly good fun ... shout outs to Ian Evans, IME Music, Daisy Dares You, The Iron Door Club, The Swiines and that Rory in particular ... also, caught by a couple of Dean Jackson's roving reporters for the Beat in the East Midlands David and James, we had a little word and it was played out on the radio. The main percentage of our time has been taken up by recording new material and posing for photo shoots, up at Baby J's studios with the star (and soon to be TV star) that is Rukus and Kayne Clarke on the camera operations. And down in Camden with Emma Baughurst and the girls ... sweet photographs all round. I'm sure you may have seen a couple ... there's plenty more to come. And we've a few more photo shoots lined up before the months is out. Keep and ear to the ground for the new material ... soon come featuring Chris Goring !!! Watch me watch me watch me simmi !!! My Glastonbury 2010 highlights ... 40th Anniversary ...

Unfortunately this is a view from the armchair perspective of Glastonbury 2010 ... from reports I've had apparently Jerry Dammers put on quite a reggae - liscious show with an orchestra ... and I'm sure there's other things that I've missed that the wonderful BBC couldn't show ... I know my highlights when actually being at the festival have nothing to do with the music most of the time ... it's all about love and peace man ... Gorillaz with Bobby Womack, Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Shaun Ryder, De La Soul, Mark E. Smith and a ridiculous cast of some of the coolest f*ckers in the world of music from all corners of the globe ... Ray Davies Stevie Wonder Dr. John featuring Chris Barber Toots And The Maytals Faithless So there ... a nice mix I hope you'll agree ... just wish I could have been there in the sunshiiiiiiiiiiiine ...

Disaster … Official SWFC.co.uk World Cup blog …

It's an indescribable feeling being an England fan and leaving the World Cup and the euphoria behind ... I'll just forward the words of Chris Waddle commentating on BBC Radio 5 Live for the game ... he knows the game ... "The FA just sit on their backsides doing nothing, tournament after tournament ... why don't they listen? Why don't they look at other countries and say "how they keep producing talent?" ... we coach talent out of players ... we look upon player like Wayne Rooney and Steve Gerrard who haven't turned up for this tournament ... Steven Gerard’s had a half decent tournament but where do we go? Where's the plan B? ... they say "well, we've got pacey wingers who can do ..." ... WE HAVEN'T !!! We haven't got players who can run ... and the back four can't control it .. Can't pass it ... we lack so many ideas it's so frustrating ... the amount of money in our league is frightening and all they do is waste it on rubbish ideas ... " So there FA ... and FIFA, come on, pull your finger out and get some goal line technology in ... it's beyond ridiculous ... they better have it in the Prem next season ... Vote for me to play at LoveBox 2010 if you would be so kind, thank you very much, it only takes a second ... http://apps.facebook.com/playlovebox/ And treat yourself to a FREE DOWNLOAD of the Adidas Trainers (Stan Smith remix) ... http://www.matthenshaw.bandcamp.com/ Regards, Matt Henshaw

Slovakia and Japan, welcome additions to the last 16 ... Official SWFC.co.uk World Cup blog …

Yesterday's games were a set of the best the World Cup has had to offer thus far ... and Slovakia and Japan, whilst underdogs and two of Alan Hansen's favourite whipping boys from the comfort of the studio, have proved themselves me than worthy of the last 16. Japanese forward Honda will no doubt be playing in Europe next season, where the money's at. His silky skills as provider for Japan's final goal was reminiscient of Henry or Bergkamp in their prime and as good as anything Lionel Messi has done, or Christiano Ronaldo has done with his head or neck, at this World Cup. And it's a shame to see the world champions Italy drop out, especially as I was speaking through the wonders of the internet to a couple of Italian girls at the time, they didn't care, and it seems that some of the Italy squaed didn't either apart from Buffon on the bench and Gattuso slicing his way into Slovakians legs !!! Did you see that gash ??? And no surprises for guessing the first European team through on 9 points ... but how far will the Netherlands get this time ??? Mogadishu Festival (July 5th) w/ Kula Shaker, The The, Joanna Newsom and more ...

So, what's my plans for this week ??? Watch as much of the World Cup as possible ... get all the coverage of Glastonbury on the TV and athe radio ... record a radio session for the BBC with Reggii ... and last night I watched that John Lennon film with Christopher Ecclestone doing his Thomas The Tank Engine impression ... not bad though ... And just think ... most of this ... in fact almost all of this is through the magic boxes we have in our homes that connect us to the world, an the majority is provided by something we take for granted called the BBC, music, information and entertainment provided for us by the governing body of this country ... Well, imagine that we didn't have this, imagine that all this, including Gorillaz playing on the Pyramid Stage was considered un-islamic and we weren't allowed to listen ... that's how it is in Somalia, there's no music on the radio and you're just not allowed to get your groove on !!! Never !!! This is where the Mogadishu Festival comes in ... you can read all about it on the website ... but the top and bottom of it is a coming together of music and musicians who believe that this here music ban is a crying shame and an outrage ... http://mogadishumusicfestival.com/ Keep listening ... Stay Beautiful and Sweet Dreams ... Matt Henshaw in this week's NME magazine ...

You can find me lurking in the pages of your favourite music news weekly magazine this week ... good to be back on the pages of the New Musical Express ... and England winning all in the same day as well ... what a corker ... There's a snippet of an interview where I do a bit of swearing for good measure and it mentions that Sam Cooke, Damon Albarn and Gnarls Barkley sound like influences upon myself ... not too shabby ... and it gives a mention to B-Boy Soul ... the sound of 2010 ... Don't forget ... There we have it ... England through, do the do ... Official SWFC.co.uk World Cup blog …

Round 1 down ... but is there anyone else like me still a little disappointed that the last 20 minutes were an exercise in keep-ball rather than entertainment ... I'm as pleased as the next English born fella that we've made it by the skin of our teeth but I wouldn't mind a little flair for my money ... bringing on a cumbersome chap like Heskey to hold the ball up (which he does well by the way) and using someone with the skill and finesse like Joe Cole to keep the ball in the corner when I believe we should be putting in the second and third in the 70th to 90th minutes of the game ... or am I just an unsatisfiable England fan ... I'd probably complain if we won it because they scored an own goal ... although that would be nice if it was someone annoying like Puyol ... So, what can we take from the game? Milner played well after giving the ball away every time he had it in the first 15 minute ... as did Upson (who I had nightmares about messing up against USA) ... Is Rooney still looking haggered by injury woes? But Lampard and Gerrard looked good, finally, would have been nice to see either of them score but as Mick n Keef sang, "you can't always get what you want" ... maybe that should be an England World Cup song along with Three Lions ... it seems a fitting epitaph for the last 100 years of World Cup woe ... sorry? what? It's only been going since 1930 ... yes, well, I've only been around since 1987 but it still seems like 100 years !!! It'll probably be Germany in the next round anyways ... what do you think about that ??? Au revoir les Francais ... the dread of tomorrow ... Official SWFC.co.uk World Cup blog …

Enjoyed this afternoon's footyball ... watching the French desperately try to not be embarrassed at the first hurdle, but embarrassed they were, at the hands of South Africa, who in turn with feel a pinch of disatisfaction at being the first host nation to exit at the group stage. However, RSA will be pleased to have beaten the former world champions, quite convincingly it has to be said, and they have been overshadowed by the two teams from the Americas in the groups, as all the teams in this tournament seem to be playing in the shadow of the latino sides ... currently sat watching Maradona's Argentina side cruise into the second round, spare a thought for the poor lad with the job of man marking Lionel Messi and the surname too long to fit on the back of his shirt ... his father will be upset, and he's likely to end up with a booking at least by the end of the game if not more ... It would not surprise me if Nigeria sneak through this group, at the behest of Greece! So, what about the English boys and tomorrow's match up against Slovenia? The news so far that Upson, Milner and Defoe are the names on the team sheet for the game aren't exactly setting my heart alight with the confidence that the game will be anything more than a struggle ... Joe Cole must start, and if he doesn't make an appearance within the hour some serious question must be asked of Don Fabio ... is there any other closet Sven fans out there?? Which England player of the past would you recall to make sure we qualify for the second stage? Chris Waddle and a crash diet for me, a player than CAN run with the ball and cross, and take free-kicks, and better hair than Valderama ... all these young wingers aren't worth their weight in salt when compared to the Newcastle / Tottenham / Marseille / Wednesday legend. Walcott, Lennon and SWP... Far Away featuring ReggiiMental, Rukus and Ras Supa video uploaded ...

Another slick reggae cut from the Matt Henshaw and ReggiiMental album 'The Deepest Cellar' ... Ras Supa and Rukus supply some sick verses rhyming with passion ... and it's all cut to this superb inspired video with slices of Jimmy Cliff in The Harder They Come ... the greatest Jamaican reggae biopic movie of all-time from Chris Blackwell's Island Records Island Production company ... breaking all the biggest names from Steve Winwood to Bob Marley to U2 and adopting Paul Weller, Tom Waits and BrianEno ... big big big ... 3 shows in 1 day ... that's rock'n'roll mister ...

This is the first live snap of Matt Henshaw and ReggiiMental playing for a live audience ... This shot is taken from the second of three shows performed on the 19th June 2010 ... the first show was on Derby Market Square in the outdoor sunshine as part of Fuse Festival in the name of Love Music Hate Racism ... a worthy cause I'm sure you'd agree and something close to the heart of The Deepest Cellar sessions ... the second show that day was live at the Derby Assembly Rooms as part of the same festival ... great to see some old Censored fans there praising the new songs ... The Deepest Cellar, Can't Hold Back and Adidas Trainers going down like gems ... The third show of the day was in the evening ... and a swift car journey down to leafy Oxfordshire and some much needed nutritional snacks for Mukka Fest and a very good gathering indeed ... like-minded people just looking for a good time and good music ... and good music was provided ... great to share a stage with the Unfriendly Neighbours boys ... something that will be happening more and more in the future I'm sure ... dropping what he had earlier it went down a real good reat um ... plus we through in a little Far Away for the reggae - soul set that worked out in such a way plus a little Grown Ups ... Finally, an enjoyable run of games ... Official SWFC.co.uk World Cup blog …

First of all, I'd like to apologise for not blogging anything following England's poor poor game on Friday ... I couldn't bring myself to say anything, and I'm sure all I would have said has been said and million and one other times by a million and one bloggers in a thousand other languages. Where was Joe Cole? Anyways, on a World Cup positive I'd just like to say how much I've enjoyed the last 24 hours of football. Finally some excitement, and goals goals goals. Even if it is bloomin' Portugal !!! Brazil vs. cote d'ivoire was a proper World Cup match-up and plenty of talking points to boot. The Kaka decision has to be overturned, I don't care if it was a second yellow or whatever, you can't bring the game into disrepute like that, and echoes of Rivlado doing a similar thing against Turkey brings the venom back, and the anti-Football naysayers to the fore. Get back, football = a glorious game. As proved when played excellently by Portugal against what some may say were inferior opposition. I say I like the Korean tykes, and have been impressed with some of their football, however, they were batted a side with some aplomb by one of Western Europe's finest. And Chile - Switzerland was good quality fast paced affair with some interesting refereeing decisions, some of the reffing in this tournament has reminded me of a game in the USA '94 World Cup when two players were sent off for kicking the ball out, Mexico vs. Bulgaria I think it was ... So, Spain to look forward to watching tonight, let's hope for another decent game ... and let's see how the Spaniards respond to their opening day loss ... better than the boys with three lions on their shirts no doubt ... How about a Free Adidas Trainers Remix Download in exchange for voting Matt Henshaw to play LoveBox 2010 ... http://apps.facebook.com/playlovebox/ ... go for it ... http://matthenshaw.bandcamp.com/ ... Adidas Trainers (Stan Smith Remix) by Matt Henshaw

One down many more to go ... Official SWFC.co.uk World Cup blog …

So have we had a good start to the World Cup ??? Vuvuzelas giving you a head ache?? Maradona's adulation too much so early on??? England's chances???? What happened to Spain???? There you go, I've pretty much summed it up in that paragraph. There's not that much happened so far. Besides a few select teams / games the goal count has been depressingly low, and the soul shakin football not to be found in too many places. So, my favourite Spain faulter at the first hurdle and my outside bet, Cote d'ivoire don't look as deadly as I thought they would against Portugal, who I still predict will go out at the close of the group stage. The USA game then? I watched too horrified as Robert Green, still in my opinion the safest pair of hands in the England goal (how's that for a statement?) spilled the ball into our goal. Too distressed!!! In my nightmares it was Ledley King making the mistake ... get Barry in for the Algeria game ... here's hoping to three points against the North African boys ... Summer gigs kick off in Leicester ... how did I do?

So, I played my first two proper gigs in almost two years over the last week, and how did they go? Pretty well I thought. Great to be on a stage again with folk lookin' at yer. And the occassional compliment on the voice is very nice, it's a while since it's been praised so much, I'd almost forgotten I could sing. But sing I did at two fairly intimate shows in my new home city of Leciester ...

Played at the Shed on Thursday night, somewhere I'd never had the pleasure of playing in my Censored days, the spiritual birthplace of a little band called Kasabian and playing alongside a great new band called Silent Signals (look out for them, they've got two beautiful female vocalists and a band of very talented musos, ambient pop/rock that will have you vibrating with pleasure (I could be a music journo!)) My set was almost like a concerto in two parts (not to grandiose sounding I hope!) ... with the first half being soulful jazzy pop numbers including three brand new songs and a bit of Frank Sinatra thrown in for good measure ... That's Life, that's what all the people say ...

And then the second half of the show at the Shed I got back to doing what I used to do ... bluesy stuff, singing for the testicles up through the stomach and the chest and then raucous through the throat ... a medley based around "You Need Love" by Willie Dxon and Muddy Waters ... then I'm sure old Censored fans will be pleased to hear I played In The Presence of the Lord upon request (yeah, that's right, people actually requeting old stuff, it's only a matter of time before i'm forced to play Your Eyes Are Made of Gold) ... and then a couple more raucous bluesy ones to close, but i'm not going to give the game away ...

And then the followig days it was an outdoor afternoon affair bookended by a couple of original tunes (including Bon Nuit Madame (Goodnight My Lady) being aired at long last in song form) and some Beatles, Ben E. King and a little Martha Reeves & The Vandellas thrown in ...

Peace Love and eternal sunshine to you all,
Thanks for reading,
