Henshaw's Horticultural Blog: Grow Your Own Celery from scraps ...

Matt Henshaw celery instagram

Merry Christmas Everybody ! I know this is not you usual xmas picture, but it is a time for sharing, and seeing as we haven't had a horticultural update for a while, as most of my little green friends are living in my little greenhouse, here's a simple all year round kind of gardening saving grace ...

Grow Your Own Celery from your scraps, simple as saving the end bit of you celery stork and plonking it in some water then watching the miracle of life continue day by day ... I trim it back on a daily basis and add to my green juices, that way the sticks grow thicker, stronger, quicker and you'll have some tasty, crunchy green celery on your hands in no time !!

Studio work this week and my last 3 shows of 2014 !!

Henshaw's Horticultural Blog: Strawberry Flowers & Getting Ready for Summer !

Good day mateys !

I've just had a wonderful morning and afternoon tea in the garden. Strawberry flowers everywhere, tulips blooming their last gasps of spring and the greenhouse is toasty and warm, currently housing my peas, hemp, lettuce, tomatoes and more herbs and spices than you'd care to shake a stick at.

Nothing like a cup of Yorkshire Tea when you're sat back admiring it all, and a juice, this afternoon made up of strawberries, mint, pomegranate, grapes, apple, pear, radish and beetroot, yum yum yum ! A real summer fruits affair !!

The weeds will come with a vengeance this time of year, but it pays of the nip a few in the bud and make sure you're flowers and fruits get all the nutrients they may usurp, look out for things like dandelions too that are perfect for adding to your green juices, there are a lot more edible bits in the garden than we're often told about. Most won't kill you, I think it's pretty obvious which one might, steer clear of the unknown berries and really dark green viney foliage.

In the meantime, doing my real job, I've uploaded a couple of acoustic demos to Soundcloud, two songs that will appear on my next EP 'Always In The Way' ... OUT JUNE 16th !!

'The Way It Is' has only been up there a couple of hours and 'Goodnight' a couple of days, but the response already has been fantastic, look out for the full band versions surfacing ... piano skills, strings, guitar solos and lots of other lovely good stuff. Stay Tuned !! Spread The Love, MHx

Things I Like ... Gardening

Springtime is upon us ! There's nothing better than getting yourself in the garden, hence the existence of Henshaw's Horticultural Blog ...

I loves me some bulbs. The Daffodils, Tulips and Garlics are coming through right now and looking glorious. Come Henshaw trivia for you - the Tulip is my favourite flower. Every man should have a favourite flower, and know his fair maiden's too. And the spiritual paganistic symbolism behind each and every one, well, maybe not that much, but it's important to know what's growing, when where and why?!

I've always enjoyed pottering, my grandad Walter was my hero as an infant, he walked up to his allotment everyday and kept it pristine, weed free and everything in perfect rows. A great man! The other side of my family has pig farmers, keen pruners and very much outdoorsy kind of folk. We're all in the Domesday Book, William the Conquerer knew about the Henshaws, Millses, Hooleys and Watsons.

Gardening is Good. Gardening is Great. It can relieve depression, fatigue, give you a spiritual mystical energy that only getting your hands dirty and in the earth can bring. You are creating life, and in some cases, produce you can eat and live from !

And we need to spread the word to the little ones ! Here's me (above) with the beautiful Becky Edwards' daughter Evelyn. Thank goodness she knows the power of gardening, a shining example to all. Can't wait to hear how her herbs, veg and flowers are getting on !

Also, just a side note, composting can save the world ... or as those inclined to being pinickety about things, composting can help preserve the conditions of the planet to necessitate human survival on the spherical rock floating around the sun.

This is my mum. She likes getting out in the garden. But even if you haven't the time, nouse or energy to plant, rotate, harvest, etc. then get yourself out for a walk, get involved in some nature ... it'll do you the world of good, and the world.

It was her Birthday and Mother's Day in this last month, so as these things come bound together each year, please by my record so then this time next year she'll be reeling from all the nice things that I've done for her !!

Henshaw's Horticultural Blog: National Agriculture Day in the Garden with Becky Edwards & Evelyn ...

Happy National Agriculture Day everybody ... I don't really know what that means, but I just read it on the internets, so let us rejoice !!

If you missed my blog yesterday, I recommended the wonderful, beautiful and effervescent Becky Edwards ... I 'll give you a moment or two to go back and read that one ...

... so now then, we're well and truly into planting season, spring has sprung and I'm so very pleased and happy and excited and all those things in between that make your heart and soul warm and tingly.

Here's me and Evelyn in the garden yesterday ...

... she is a smashing a terrific little human being ! We planted some mint, carrots, tomatoes, peas and some sunflowers ! She informed me that "gardening is an outside activity", "gardening makes you happy", "it doesn't matter if you get messy" and that "mummy doesn't like getting messy, except when she eats!"

You can read more of Evelyn's hilarious oeuvre over here at Things Evelyn Says ...

In the meantime, do as we do, get your wellies on and get outside !!

And, also, if you missed it, share, Like, Love and cherish this ...

Henshaw's Horticultural Blog: The Major Oak ...

Good Afternoon / Good Evening fellows,

Back to life, and back with the beauty of this world, for some inexplicable reason or another I entered my two pennies in the ring over on facebook last, and today for another inexplicable reason I ave driven around some lovely parts of Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire, and I thought I'd share my little friend in my garden ...

... Ladies & Gentlemen, the new Major Oak !

Don't worry Forestry Commission, or get your proverbial knickers in a twist, I didn't pinch this little fella from the roadside. He sprouted from a pot alongside my whiteberry bush, so I rescue him, separated him, nursed him to health and now I'm happy to say he's sprouted some lovely green oak leaves !

Here's my ode to Nottingham - 'Play The Game' - available now on my EP ...

Yesterday, I did a bit of Dr Botany work, rescuing some of Mia and the Moon's Laura Ann Ratcliffe's daffodils ... have a read of my recommendation of their beautiful music ... FYI daffodil pictured was saved from the roadside, Laura's daffodil were bigger, deader, and more of a collective in a tiny little pot with some moss, hence the big washing up bowl ... not pictured, Laura and her soup ladle that we used to go and pinch some soil from Bede Park ...

Henshaw's Horticultural Blog - Gardening Spring (At Last!)

Well, here we are, March, no snow, no rain, no hail, Sunshine !! Sunshiiiiiiiiiiine !!

I've been out in the garden, Oasis on the stereo and tea in my belly ... plus all the vitamins, juice, ketone and essential oil, enough to make a grown man cry tears of joy. If you're not doing the same thing then I suggest you take a walk outside and embrace the happiness.

Check the summer rays and the row of tulips coming through. I think it might be the first time I've posted a #nofilter picture on instagram.

If you've been prepping your garden through the winter and planting all the right things at all the right times, tended to your pots and your greenhouse, and weeded sufficiently, you can pretty much sit back now and enjoy the growing of the greens and the blessing of the oxygen it brings.

Get outside, go outside and Enjoy ...

Matt Henshaw's Horticultural Blog - Planting Season !

It's wet, it's windy and more often than not, it's raining ! But if you get a half hour dry patch like the one I've just had this afternoon then get outside in the brief sunshine and tend to the soil. It misses you !

And if this kind of thing makes you happy like it does me then go and have a look t the tulip or daffodil bulbs you put out in the autumn ...

You should be coming up to harvesting time for your winter goodies, my garlics, winter potatoes, lettuce and herb plants are coming along nicely. Plus, I took a gamble on a chocolate pepper just before the winter solstice on the kitchen windowsill - they should be planted in January - and it's so happy ... best friends with the thyme plant on there.

Worry not, however, you've got between January and June really to get most of your vegetables in, so depending on your time and efficiency get them sown when you can. Just plopped in some lovely little spuds, peas, beans and some hemp seeds.

NB. you will have some casualties on the way, no time to get upset and dwell on your losses, my radish and spinach plants couldn't handle the extreme colds we been having but you might get lucky and even though my whiteberry bushes and silver sage plant have been outside facing the endless batterings of the weather and they're looking strong and fabulous as ever !

Life is as Life is, it comes and it goes, one of my best friends has just had a happy, healthy baby girl, 2014 is the year for positivity and celebration. Join in ! Turn off the TV, go outside ... wrap up mind you !

Planting in your Autumn/Winter Garden & Vegetable Patch - Henshaw's Horticultural Blog

Here in the East Midlands it's been raining heavily for the last couple of days, I haven't had much chance to get out and do anything too productive in the garden besides tending to my compost heap, keeping my greenhouse happy and getting some seedlings going on the windowsill. But now is a perfect opportunity to tell you about what I've put in the ground outside.

Growing Winter Garlic
The main "crop" I've got on the go this winter is garlic. Take each clove of a garlic bulb, which will in turn become a new bulb, and place them around 2cm deep (so not very) in well and deeply dug over soil clear of weeds, stones and general rubbish. The area should be well-drained but the bulbs need plenty of water and need to be packed into the soil so they can absorb moisture and expand. I'll keep you up-to-date on growing winter garlic, if you do go for it though, take plenty of care of the patch, regularly weeding and hoeing in between, to encourage drainage and absorbing of moisture, when the bulb start to show the plant you might have to encourage the top opening up gently, and look out for flowers that need to be snipped and take nutrients away from the bulb. The more you care for your cloves / bulbs the better and more flavour-some your garlic should taster. But garlic does grow wild so you can sow your cloves and chance it, but chances are you'll end up with a sour soggy little bulb, not the best addition to your home-made loaf.

Growing Potatoes
A simple addition to your winter garden and happy little plants all year round are potatoes, just stick sprouting potatoes that have been neglected in the cupboard for a while. A few things to avoid, make sure the potatoes are not turning green, it's a minute possibility, and you'd be very unlucky but the chlorophyll that forms in potatoes could be poisonous, don't let it kill you, just thought I'd say but it's seriously not a big worry! A few words of advice, avoid supermarket potatoes, or anything packaged in plastic (should be a general rule of thumb anyway), you don't want your crop affected by chemicals or bleach that they use to make your potatoes supermarket fresh, or at least aesthetically pleasing for the shortsighted. The best place to go is farmer's markets, your local market or a friend with a potato patch. Support Local Produce!! Again, they love the water, love the moisture, don't need much attention aside from clearing pesky weeds stealing their nutrience, although potatoes are pretty hardy, you should find yourself harvesting some broth filling in no time at all. And again, chop off the flowers ...

Flowers? Tulip bulbs for spring!
Withthe weather it might look ad feel a bit drab outside at the minute but just wait, a little preparation and you might have a wonderful array of colour come spring. Now's the time to get your bulbs in to germinate and gain nutrience over the winter. Care for your bulbs, whether tulip or daffodil, I have a preference for tulips is essential, before you plant them, make sure they're kept in a dry, warm area, you wouldn't want them trying to grow in your kitchen cupboard would you.

Seedlings
Also, I've got the kitchen windowsill and greenhouse as an extension of my patch, I'll tell you about them next time ... ooh, and my multi-coloured heathers.

And for now, keep listening, just done a little facebook update, doing loads of radio sessions and acoustic shows, it's all good, going to add more videos to my youtube page soon, including some teasers of new stuff and general japes, also, been recording some of my favourite little oldies on my new toy / iPhone, debating whether I should share them will the general public, and as readers of my blog, hence, biggest admirers I'll let you decide ... first though, My Life needs more views, I've only earned a few quid from YouTube so far ...
